Founded 1970 under the 1968 law reforming higher education as one of four Universities replacing the former Université de Bordeaux - founded 1441 by Papal Bull with Faculties of Theology, Canon Law, Civil Law, Medicine and Arts. The University was suppressed by the Revolution and replaced by Faculties of Theology, Letters and Science of the Université de France. Reconstituted as university in 1896. Becomes Université Bordeaux Montaigne in 2014. A state institution enjoying academic and financial autonomy, operating under the juridiction of the Minister of Education and financed by the State.
