Founded 1866 as Syrian Protestant College with School of Medicine added 1867 and Pharmacy 1871. Rechartered as American University of Beirut 1920. Institutional Accreditation granted 2004. A private non-denominational institution under charter from the educational authorities of the State of New York, USA, with a self-perpetuating Board of Trustees. Supported by fees, income from an endowment, and private gifts and donations.
